Five Fun Ideas to Celebrate the Beginning of the NASCAR Season with Kids!
The Daytona 500 marks the beginning of another NASCAR* racing season. Excitement abounds in our household as the racing fans gear up for the big race tomorrow! I already caught my husband holed up in the den watching the Nationwide race today. I'm preparing myself for the roar of the engines tomorrow.
Do you have any young racecar fans in your home? Try out some of these fun ideas as you celebrate the start of racing season.
1. Racing-Themed Food
One of my favorite ways to celebrate a racing event is with this easy checkered flag fruit plate! I spread vanilla yogurt on a platter (in the shape of a flag) and place blackberries and banana slices on the yogurt. Healthy, yummy and fun!
Serve your checkered flag fruit along with any round "wheel-shaped" food: bagel sandwiches, English muffin pizzas or burgers are some of our favorites.
2. Checkered Flag Craft
Have your kids design their own checkered flags (or other racing flags) on a small piece of paper or index card; attach the paper/index card to a straw (with tape) to make a mini-flag.
3. Tire Hunt
My kids love scavenger hunts and searching for items. One of our favorite race-time activities is to go on a "tire hunt." I hide a bunch of individually wrapped O-shaped hard candies, and have my kids go searching for these candy "tires."
4. Play with Toy Cars
If you have any young race car fans in your home, you most certainly have a few toy cars. Encourage your kids to play with these cars; set up ramps and obstacle courses to make playtime more fun!
5. Check Out a Real Engine
During NASCAR races, it is common for the commentators to show the inner workings of a race car. Before or after the race, take your kids out to examine your own vehicle—pop the hood and take a peek inside!
