A successful wild rumpus! (Where are the wild things? In my backyard!)
In celebration of Maurice Sendak's birthday on Friday, my boys enjoyed a backyard wild rumpus! It all started when the kids came home from school. We read Where the Wild Things Arewhile enjoying a "birthday" treat (a sweet afterschool snack). When I mentioned having a wild rumpus, they loved the idea!
We began with a staring contest (if you remember the story, Max "tamed [the Wild Things] with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once").
We then headed outside for the real fun. The boys hung from trees and play equipment, just like the wild things in the story.
The book gave them the idea to run around and act crazy (not that they needed any encouragement).
Yes, it was a successful wild rumpus! The boys expended some energy. We made some fun memories. And just like Max, I hope each of my boys finds home to be the place "where someone love[s] him best of all."
