building family ties with a building family theme night
Last night was a chilly January evening in upstate New York—the perfect time for a LEGO* building family night. (Of course, our boys would consider anytime the perfect time for LEGO building—they are LEGO fanatics!) Anyway, I like to start our family theme nights with a themed meal, so I scoured the grocery store for anything “LEGO.” No luck. (I know there was a time when one could purchase LEGO waffles and LEGO gummy snacks—why not now?) I decided it was time to be creative. With waffles on my mind, I had a grocery list with some special treats—strawberries, whipped cream, and some all-natural fruit flats that would be perfect for a construction project. I changed my mind about the waffles (since there were no LEGO waffles and the other frozen ones just didn’t look appealing)—French toast! We haven’t had that in a while! I picked up an extra loaf of bread and some eggs, and I was now armed for the perfect building family fun night.
This family night was very simple. For dinner I made French toast sticks (easier to build with), and we had fun constructing pools with strawberry “water,” sausage people (toothpicks make great arms and legs), and my seven year old constructed an impressive log cabin with an angled fruit-flat roof (pictured below). Family theme night is the one time you can play with your food!

After dinner we spent the evening—you guessed it—LEGO building! The entire family participated. At the end of the evening, I was left with one question: Which family member h ad the most fun?
