All week I have been posting ways to use Resurrection Eggs.  It has been pretty easy coming up with ideas so far, until I got to today.  The 5th egg.  The one with a whip.

Parts of the Easter story are just not very pretty.  When we reflect on the harsh reality of it all, it brings an unpleasant picture to mind.  And as much as  I want my kids to know the whole story, I have to admit that I struggle with explaining this part to them.  Children are so sweetly innocent.

As you open the fourth egg, take the opportunity to teach your kids about prayer:

The Friday faith-filled family fun blog is a series of weekly posts with fun activities based around Bible stories.

I love using Resurrection Eggs by FamilyLife Publishing! They are a great resource, and a fun way to tell the Biblical Easter story to kids.  It has become a tradition in our family to use them every year to tell the Easter story.

As wonderful and rich a resource they are, sometimes I feel the need to mix things up a little to keep things interesting.  If you use them every year, perhaps you feel the same way!  Here are five extension activities to make this tool even more fun:

Are you looking for a simple craft or activity to try with your kids?  I made these cute (and easy!) bunnies with my boys.
Ingredients:
Ice cream cones (cup style)
White/vanilla frosting
Marshmallows (regular sized and mini-marshmallows)
Red hots, jelly beans, or other small candies
black frosting (or licorice)
Directions:
Turn ice cream cone cups upside down and cover with frosting (my boys enjoyed this activity, especially sampling the frosting!).  Put one regular sized marshmallow on top of the cone for a head (adhere with frosting).  Add four mini-marshmallows on top for the ears (see picture).  Add two mini-marshmallows on the front for the front paws, and one on the back for the tail.  Add facial details, "glueing" candy on with frosting.  (We used red hot candies and jelly beans for the nose, and black decorator's frosting for the eyes and whiskers—but other candies or licorice for the whiskers would work!)  Enjoy your cute bunnies as a decoration for your Easter table!

creative ways to use resurrection eggs: a list of extension activities

I love using Resurrection Eggs by FamilyLife Publishing!  They are a great resource, and a fun way to tell the Biblical Easter story to kids.  We have enjoyed using them every year, but this year I wanted to do something different.  In addition to the ideas included in this wonderful resource, try out some of these activities!

Play a quiz game!  My boys actually came up with this idea.  Look up the Bible verses for each egg, but instead of opening the egg immediately, have kids guess what is in the egg.

After discovering the meaning of each egg, play charades to guess items such as the donkey, praying hands, crown of thorns, dice, etc.

Include some extension activities with some (or all) of the eggs!  Here are some possibilities:

Egg #1 (donkey):  Make a donkey craft!  For active kids, hide the pieces for the craft (the ears, head, etc.) and have them find the pieces before putting the craft together.  Another option:  act out the donkey part of the story, using stuffed animals as props.

fun easter bunny craft and games--a recipe for an easter family fun night!

A friend of mine asked me for suggestions for cute Easter (or bunny) crafts or snacks.  After reading her request, I headed into the pantry and let my crazy teacher mind go to work.  I found some rather stale ice cream cones (the cup style kind), and it got me to thinking.  How could I turn these into a bunny rabbit?  I have a favorite December craft that involves frosting and decorating an ice cream cone to look like a tree.  I think my Easter table could use some cute bunnies made in a similar fashion!  Time to whip up some white frosting, get out the marshmallows (I found those in the pantry too), and decorate some bunnies!

While I had rabbits on the brain, I thought of a fun game to make.  Wouldn’t it be a lot of fun to make paper cup rabbits and then make a “bunny bowling” game using the cups for pins?  (I think I had bowling on my mind because we went bowling with the Easter bunny today!)  The paper cup rabbits could also be used for a “which rabbit is hiding the jelly bean” game too.  Holidays can be so much fun!

For those of you that celebrate Easter but don’t do the whole bunny and egg thing, I will be listing my activities to go with the Resurrection Eggs later this week.  And stay tuned for pictures!

For many people, springtime and Easter seem to go hand in hand. It is no different in our household. Being a church-going type of gal, Easter is actually a highlight of the year. Now my boys are getting a bit older (they feel very grown-up at the ages of five and seven) and they seem to know the Easter story frontwards and backwards. (Or at least they think they do!) The thought occurred to me this week, how can I make Easter more interesting and meaningful this year?

I think I have my plan. We love to use our Resurrection Eggs (from Family Life Publishing) to retell the story. What if we did an extra activity as we opened each egg? A donkey craft for egg one, a game of chance when we open the dice, a book about Roman soldiers to go with the spear . . .

I see a fun week ahead! Read my next blog to find out more.
